Why This Blog?

This blog is the repository of materials I use with my students to help them think about what schools and teaching may be like in the future. I will add materials as I find them. If you have suggestions for materials that should be included here, please let me know via Twitter @drjohnhadley or by Email.

I also use these materials to stimulate an ongoing conversation with students and faculty on two questions: How do we determine whether a teacher is "technologically literate"? and Must all teachers be "technologically literate"?

The first question is the result of thinking about the second which was the central issue addressed in a 2007 post by Karl Fisch, author of The Fischbowl and Director of Technology for Arapahoe High School in Littleton, Colorado: "Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?"

  9. Great video, I think I'm going to save this video for future reference. On the extremely difficult days I want to reflect back and ask was I better today than yesterday.

  11. I love it!! Hopefully the same question that has the potential to change our lives will be the same as the one that changes our students' lives.

  15. I like this video, a lot. I really enjoy pieces that inspire creative thinking. I, also, have a love for catchy background music, too. I do not know what my "sentence" is, but I already know that my today is better than my yesterday because each day I strive to live my life that way. It is nice to know I am not the only one who thinks that is a good idea. For me, it is comforting to lay my head on my pillow at night and know three things: 1. I did the best I could today. 2. Today was better than yesterday. and 3. There's always tomorrow for more improvement on the mistakes I did make today. I am interested to see what Dr. Strange's "sentence" is, but I am going to wait until after I turn in my assignment. Great video and interesting assignment. Good teaching Dr. Strange.

  17. Did I learn something new today, or did I waste it?

  18. All of us want to leave a legacy, how will they remember me?

  19. This was a great video! My sentence would be...She made sure every child knew they could accomplish anything they set their mind to.

  20. This video is great. I really enjoyed it, but man, I don't even know where to begin with my sentence.

  21. I swear, this class is more then just a class. It is a self-defining experience. Dr. Strange, you give us quite a few topics that I have used to analyze things relevant to me. Where do you find them? I enjoyed the video! All I have to say, well ask, "What else is next, Dr. Strange?"

  22. I liked this video, and always strive to do better! I liked your sentence Dr. Strange! I have some thinking to do!

  23. I loved the video! I agree with Lisa. I have thought more about the teacher I want to be. Because of EDM310 I have found "me" and now I have to put all the pieces of the puzzle together so I can be not just a teacher but a GREAT EDUCATOR! My sentence comes easy!!

  24. It is happy to know that everyone has a sentence and that everyone has an important place in this world and they can recognize it.

  25. I think it would be good to focus oneself on a sentence. As opposed to simply doing a lot of things, one could strive to do one thing well. If I could have any one sentence by the end of life, I would want it to be that I loved my family.

  26. This is a great video!! I love it how encourages one to think not of him or herself but how he or she has made an impact.

  27. I like the video, and it gave me pause to think, "what have I done today that I could do better tomorrow?" It has encouraged me to try and be a better person. I don't know what my sentence would be, but I am going to try and figure it out.

  28. My response to these questions can be summed up with these lyrics in this song

    Legacy ~ Nichole Nordeman

I don't mind if you've got something nice to say about me
And I enjoy an accolade like the rest
You could take my picture and hang it in a gallery
Of all who's who and so-n-so's that used to be the best
    At such'n'such ... it wouldn't matter much

I won't lie, it feels alright to see your name in lights
We all need an 'Atta boy' or 'Atta girl'
But in the end I'd like to hang my hat on more besides
The temporary trappings of this world

I want to leave a legacy
    How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love? Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things?
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace who
    blessed your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy

I don't have to look too far or too long awhile
To make a lengthy list of all that I enjoy
It's an accumulating trinket and a treasure pile
Where moth and rust, thieves and such will soon enough destroy

Not well traveled, not well read, not well-to-do or well bred
Just want to hear instead, "Well Done" good and faithful one...

    so what is my sentence?

I would like my sentence to be, "She wasn't afraid to share her faith as she pointed others to the Way in Yeshua HaMashiach." Did I plant more seeds than I did yesterday? Did I remember to water the seeds I planted already? G-d only knows, but I truly desire to be a better disciple today than yesterday :)

  29. Everyone should ask themselves the second question daily. "Was I better today than I was yesterday?" This could apply to your career, your family, your religious walk, etc. I need some time to reflect before I know what my sentence will be.

  30. What a Great way to live by...although summing me up in one sentence will be hard. I love how the video said to ask yourself daily "Was I better that I was yesterday?" This should maybe be the last thought before we drift off to dreaming so that we can reflect on how to become a better person each day. Hopefully our sentence will not only change our lives, but the life of someone else! :)

  31. That is pretty crazy! One sentence to sum up my entire life!?! It makes me re-think what my sentence is going to be now.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think my sentence will be "Where would I be without you?", followed by "What will I do without You?".
